winter garden

Her pleasure in the walk must arise from the exercise and the day, from the view of the last smiles of the year upon the tawny leaves and withered hedges, and from repeating to herself some few of the thousand poetical descriptions extant of autumn–that season of peculiar and inexhaustible influence on the mind of taste and tenderness–that season which has drawn from every poet worthy of being read some attempt at description, or some lines of feeling.  - Jane Austen

Today has been a very rainy day. It’s been the kind of day full of busy nothings and petty annoyances. Surprisingly, there are still flowers blooming in the garden. The frost (dare I say snow) is due tomorrow, and then all bets are off. The thought that it may be a good six months before I see flowers in the garden again is a wee bit depressing, but fall has its own rewards. The leaves are brilliant shades of red and yellow, and the world seems to be filled with pumpkins and apples. Even the rain isn’t so bad.

This twinkly nail polish from Deborah Lippmann looks like just the right color for today.
